I’ve been extremely fortunate to have been invited to a lot of restaurants since I started up this little old blog at the start of last year, and I’ve been very grateful for each one. But now and again, an invitation pops into your inbox that really gets your mouth watering! For me, that happened when I received an invitation recently to try out MeatUp in Wandsworth – as any regular readers of Got To Be Gourmet will know, high quality meat is very important to me, and I love nothing more than tucking into a good piece of beef!
MeatUp opened a few months ago in Wandsworth, which is pretty close to where we live, and where my sister-in-law and her husband live, so it was exciting to find a potential new local place for us to hang out. Head Chef Stephen Hinkley has been working with the finest meat merchants in the country to serve up the very best British meat, cooked to order on their special Josper grill, which I was very excited to try!
MeatUp is located on Old York Road and it’s open every day. We decided to try out their Sunday Roast menu and just about managed to sit outside before winter finally arrives! I loved the signpost outside (definitely not one for the veggies, sorry veggie friends!!)
Tim was driving so he stuck to the soft drinks, but I experimented with a cocktail – and I’m so glad I did, because it was one of the best I’ve ever had!
MeatUp serves some great sharing platters with all kinds of meats, but we wanted to save ourselves for the main roasts and didn’t go for quite so massive starters. I ordered the crab and Tim ordered the crispy squid, which were both very good. Fairly simple dishes that did what they said on the tin.
This was followed by the main event. The roast! I ordered the beef and Tim went for lamb. As the plates arrived, they were easily some of the most generous meat portions I’ve been served for a Sunday roast.
Both the beef and the lamb were beautifully cooked (as you can see from the photos above) and had a delicious, rich meaty flavour to them. My only complaint is that the beef was a little on the cold side, but we were sitting outside and that was easily rectified with a healthy pouring of warm (and very tasty!) gravy!
We had some vegetables on the side, but they have all sorts of sides on offer for Sunday lunch, including rosemary and garlic jacket potato, mac and cheese, and ash charred corn.
And as always, we had to make room for dessert. As soon as the waitress mentioned a chocolate brownie, Tim’s mind was made up. This was served with burnt butter ice cream and a fudge sauce. I went for the sticky toffee pudding, with clotted cream.
Both were delicious – the sticky toffee had a bit of a Christmas pudding feel to it in terms of the flavour, which made me feel really festive! I’m always happy to be in a Christmassy mood!
