Luxury Easter Eggs: Hotel Chocolat and Heston Blumenthal/Waitrose

Each year Tim and I buy each other an Easter Egg and this year, we both ended up buying each other dark, rather luxurious eggs. I bought Tim the Heston Blumenthal Easter Egg from Waitrose: It’s in a very nice black and gold box – it almost looks more like a whisky/spirit box than an Easter egg! It opens up from the side to uncover a golden painted chocolate egg and when you crack into it, it reveals dark chocolate on the inside with a number of smaller mandarin flavour eggs, on a bed of edible straw. It’s all very ‘Heston’! Tim bought me the Rabot 1745 Easter Egg from Hotel Chocolat: I adore Hotel Chocolat – it’s pricey, but the chocolate is always so delicious. It’s the closest I’ve ever found to the chocolate we tasted in Belgium, many years ago. The Rabot 1745 egg is one of their ‘extra thick’ range – one side is pure Madagascan 72% dark chocolate, and the other in  Saint Lucian 70% milk chocolate – it’s going to …

Dinner at Michael Caines – ABode Exeter

In January, Tim and I spent a night at the ABode hotel in Exeter, while we were down there doing wedding planning. For those of you who don’t know, we both went to university in Exeter and have many happy memories there, which is why we wanted to get married in Devon. We settled for Dartmoor in the end, but most of our suppliers were located around the city centre, so we generally stayed around there. The ABode hotel (formerly the Royal Clarence) is located on the beautiful cathedral green and is home to one of Michelin starred chef, Michael Caines’, restaurants. We were booked onto a ‘date night’ package, which included the room (a beautiful one, too!), a bottle of prosecco and a three course meal for the two of us in Michael Caines’ restaurant. I had been to the restaurant once before, while we were at University. We went for dinner for a friend’s 21st birthday – it was lovely, but being students, we couldn’t afford to indulge too much! For starter I …

Throwback Thursday – Beast

As I’ve been lucky enough to visit so many wonderful restaurants in the past, I’ve decided to introduce a weekly blog post, talking about one of those places each week. My very own ‘Throwback Thursday’. And today I’m writing about Beast. The other half and I went there for my birthday in October last year, and it’s one of the best meals I’ve had in London. The premise is simple. They serve crab and steak. And fortunately those are two of my very favourite things 🙂 On arrival at Beast (located just behind Oxford Street), you head underground in an elevator, to be greeted by a tank full of live crab, and a fridge full of meat! It’s not the kind of place for those who don’t really like to think about what they’re eating. Beast is very upfront about this – you can even handle one of the live crab if that takes your fancy (although that was one step too far for me!) You are seated at long, wide, wooden benches, very ‘Norwegian’ …
