August 2015: A house, a kitten, and lots of blogging!

Hello all! As I’m posting quite a lot on the blog now, I thought it might be nice to do a little round-up of the things I’ve written about at the end of each month, collated in one post. So here’s my first one for August! And it has been a busy month! We exchanged, completed and moved into our very first house in Tooting, and at the weekend, we got our first kitten, Dexter (yes, named after the TV show serial killer!) A month of firsts, big expenditure and lots and lots of packing boxes (which Dexter seems to be having a lot of fun with!) I’ve still somehow managed to keep up with blogging, alongside my day job, so here’s what I wrote about on the blog this month! Restaurants/Pop-ups I visited… I visited a very cool Berlin Brunch pop-up in London. Read more here. I tucked into gourmet sandwiches, salads and puds at Aline in Mayfair (possibly the most I’ve ever eaten in one sitting!). Read more here. For Afternoon Tea Week, I tried …

Being an Asda Butcher’s Apprentice for the evening!

As I’m sure you’ll know by now, high quality meat is very important to me. My Dad worked in the British meat industry for over 40 years and so I have rather unconventional childhood memories of visiting his office during the school holidays and seeing posters with images of animal carcasses on the walls, and overhearing discussions about abattoirs and auction houses. Some might be a bit taken aback by that, but for me it was all pretty straightforward. We lived in a little village in North Yorkshire and some of my friends were farmers, so there was never any doubt about where these animals were going, and what was happening to them. We always had good meat in our house and I honestly can’t recall a single meal that didn’t contain meat of some kind. I think my Dad would have refused to eat it. Or he would have grumbled his way through it! As I’ve mentioned in previous blog posts, I’m a bit worried about the way food/cooking trends are going in the UK. …

A Gourmet British BBQ!

Well the UK weather this week has been pretty incredible/horrendous, hasn’t it? Temperatures reached 36 degrees Celsius in London on Wednesday, the hottest I’ve ever experienced in the city! You would think I’d be used to the heat having grown up in Cyprus, but that’s definitely not the case! In hot countries you stop work/school by 2pm due to the heat, so having to deal with similar temperatures in a city, in an office with no fan or air con, or on buses packed with people (with no opening windows, I’d like to add) it’s pretty testing!  What would have made this week much nicer, is coming home to a nice BBQ in the garden at the end of the day. We can’t do this in the flat where we currently live, but as soon as we get a place with a garden, it’s one of the first things we’ll be buying. In fact, my sister-in-law and her partner kindly offered to get us one as a wedding present. We can’t wait!  BBQs were always …

Taste of London 2015: Review

Wandering around a park filled as far as the eye could see with top London restaurants, the scent of meats and seafood filling the air, I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. Taste of London takes place at Regents Park every summer and last weekend, I got to visit for the first time, as I’d always been away when it was taking place before. This year it was held from 17th-21st June, and I went with Tim and our friends James and Clare on the Saturday. Clutching hold of a big wad of ‘Crowns’ (the Taste of London currency to purchase food dishes), we headed inside! There are so many restaurants and suppliers there, it’s hard to know where to begin! I’d picked up some hints and tips from press that had attended earlier in the week, so I had a few ideas. So I thought it would be easiest to list what we drank and ate at the show… What we drank Meantime Brewery Lager & Pale Ale This was our first stop …
