CELIA: Gluten-Free, Organic Lager

You may have read some of my recent posts about gluten-free food products. It’s something I’m trying to learn more about, especially when I discovered just how horrible coeliac disease can be. I’m keen to share my ‘gluten-free finds’ with you, in the hope that they will reach those who suffer with coeliac disease. I hope I managed to do that with my post about Coori foods, bringing staple Italian products back into the lives of those who can’t eat gluten. Now I’m moving over to the alcohol side, with CELIA gluten-free lager.  CELIA is a Czech lager brand, producing an organic and a dark lager (both gluten-free). The organic version is only 136kcal (labelled ‘one of the healthiest beers‘ by Men’s Health) and is brewed in the walls of a 14th century castle, from just three locally sourced ingredients; malted barley, saaz hops and water from the Žatec foothills. They have a patented ‘de-glutenisation’ process which (in technical terms) produces an ELISA tested value of <5 parts per million for a truly light lager, and because of their silicone …

Moretti Gran Tour, Hackney

The Moretti Gran Tour is unlike any other pop up dining experience I’ve been to recently, as it solely focuses on the best of Italian food and beer, from various regions around the country. The London part of the tour was held last week at Space Studios in Hackney. For some unknown reason, the event venue, street number and postcode gave three completely different locations in Hackney and after 40 minutes of walking and getting lost, I eventually found it – I’ve never wanted an ice cold beer more! Upon arrival I was given a cute ‘passport’ with details on Moretti beer and all of the vendors at the event – each vendor stamped your passport when you bought food from them, and if you completed the passport, you went away with a goody bag! Moretti is a lovely refreshing Italian beer, with a long history. Luigi Moretti’s ‘beer and ice factory’ was founded more than a century ago in Udine – the first bottle was sold in the summer of 1860.     Today Birra Morretti …

Throwback Thursday – The Barking Crab, Boston (USA)

This week I’ve been speaking to a lovely mum blogger for my job, who moved out to Boston with her family. I visited Boston a couple of years ago when I was working at 2K and loved it, so I thought I’d make this week’s Throwback Thursday about The Barking Crab. I visited Boston in February 2013 for a press trip to one of our studios, during a huge snow storm (I’m surprised my flight actually made it into the US!) I think this view from my room at The Langham Hotel says it all: I had a free day at the weekend to myself and was determined to see some of the sights of Boston, despite the snow nearly coming up to my knees. I managed to trek through the snow to the Boston Tea Party museum, which was great fun (although being English there was a little awkward, I kept rather quiet!!) and afterwards, I met one of my colleagues and a couple of our journalists from Australia (who were certainly not expecting …
