Dinner at Naughty Piglets, Brixton

So many people had recommended ‘Naughty Piglets’ in Brixton to me. They said I’d love it – lots of tasty small plates and a great selection of wines and beers. Brixton is also fairly close to where we live, so one Friday evening a few weeks ago, Tim and I decided to give it a try. It’s a very popular place and seeing as we’d left it fairly last minute, we could only get a table for 6.30pm, but that wasn’t really a problem. You can book to sit in either the bar or restaurant, so we’d booked the latter. Naughty Piglets, set up by husband and wife team Joe and Margaux Sharratt, describes itself as a Charcoal Grill Restaurant and a ‘Natural’ Wine Bar, using market products and following the seasons, serving simple tasty food made with care as well as pouring low intervention wines. When we arrived we didn’t realise quite how small it would be, but small can often be a very good thing. There were lots of tall bar tables surrounding the …

Experiencing the new Grub Crawl, Brixton

I’ve been on a fair few pub crawls in my life, the most memorable of which was the circle line challenge in London (a different drink in a different pub at each stop on the circle line). It was pretty heavy, starting at Aldgate and ending prematurely at Notting Hill due to the sheer amount of alcohol consumption. More of a semi circle challenge really! Recently I was invited to try out an awesome new concept – a grub crawl! How would this work? I hear you cry! The concept is actually quite simple – you have your starter in one restaurant, main in another and, you guessed it, dessert in another. This is the brainchild of the lovely Hannah (of That Adventurer) who wanted to share the culinary delights of her area, Brixton, with fellow foodies. Brixton has changed a lot since I lived there for a very short time when I first moved to London, around seven years ago. It’s become quite ‘trendy’ and the market is now host to so many incredible …

#FoodieFriends – Hannah’s Thai Ice Cream Experience at Yumitub

My latest #FoodieFriends post is from the lovely Hannah Fish, who has written about her experience at YumiTub in Brixton – a very cool new Thai rolled ice cream company (yes, you read that right!) Over to you, Hannah 🙂 Just as I thought I had done the rounds of the culinary delights on offer in Brixton market, Pop arrived – just in time for the summer! This new events space (created from shipping containers) plays host to a number of local craft traders and has a range of culinary options to choose from. Amongst them is an ice cream maker with a twist. Formed in 2015, Yumitub is no traditional cone and flake affair. The process starts with ice cream in a liquid form (chocolate or vanilla) which is poured onto a cold plate – that resembles a crepe plate.     Traditional tools and a chopping motion are then used to move the ice cream around the plate and gradually this becomes a more solid mass of melted ice cream. Then comes the …

My Food Heaven at Champagne + Fromage

I’m a little bit worried you’re all going to get bored of me rabbiting on about cheese, but hey ho, here’s another cheese-tastic blog post! This time I’m writing about Champagne + Fromage. I first came across the restaurant on Twitter a few weeks ago, as they’ve opened a new branch in Greenwich, not too far from where I live.  But on Saturday I planned to meet my friend Laura for lunch, and we ended up at Brixton market. After sitting at a table at a tapas restaurant for about 15 minutes being completely ignored, then told there was basically nothing on the menu, we decided to try elsewhere. And low and behold, we stumbled across Champagne + Fromage, right in the heart of the market (it was like a cheesy, dreamy mirage!) I’d completely forgotten they had a place there.     I couldn’t grab a table quick enough after glancing at the menu board outside, and we were promptly served by a very friendly, helpful gentleman.  My heart honestly skipped a beat when I …
