Dinner at The Square Pig, Holborn

A few weeks ago I was invited to try out the new menu at the recently refurbished ‘The Square Pig’ in Holborn. It’s a short walk from my office and it’s always useful to find good restaurants around that area, as it’s a great spot for meeting friends for a quick bite after work. As you walk into The Square Pig, it’s got a typical ‘gastropub’ feel to it, with a lively buzz and mix of people drinking and eating. Now I have to point something out right away in this review – it was particularly dark on the night I visited, and my camera was having absolutely none of it! I tried the flash a few times, but no fellow diners want to have a paparazzi show on the table next door. So The Square Pig kindly gave me some photos for this post, which were much needed. I’ve never had to do this before, so it must have been particularly dark in there! But hey, dark means cosy, and there’s nothing better than a …

Dinner at Inn The Park, St James’s Park

There are some stunning parks in London, but one that I seem to forget about is St James’s. Tucked in between Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace, it’s actually a real beauty, as I discovered when I went for dinner at Inn The Park with Sophie recently. The name is quite self explanatory – it’s a wooden, almost chalet-style building located right in the middle of the park. We were seated outside overlooking the park and lake (and plenty of joggers, but we turned a blind eye to them as we knocked back the wine!!) and it was certainly a lovely spot. The menu at Inn The Park is separated into small plates, main courses and desserts. We weren’t completely sure how big the small plates would be (there was a special offer to share three between two people) but we decided to go for one each. When they arrived, I’d say they were big enough for a starter portion, especially sitting outside on a warm summer day, you don’t need anything heavy. Sophie ordered the Suffolk …

Lunch at Meat & Shake, Tooting

Now who doesn’t love a good American BBQ place? There are some brilliant ones in London, Bodeans has always been one of our faves. This weekend we tried out a new local one, which we’d been meaning to check out for a while – Meat & Shake. The name pretty much does what it says on the tin – meat and milkshakes! It’s a pretty big menu, with a wide choice of burgers and smoked BBQ dishes. As you might have read, I adore anything with truffle flavour, so I had to order the Truffle Shuffle burger –  Beef Burger with Truffle Mayo, Gruyère Cheese, Honey & Onion Truffle Glaze. It was absolutely gorgeous and definitely up there in my top 5 burgers to date! I also ordered a side of Pit Beans – 5 kinds of beans slow-cooked and smoked in tomato sauce, enriched with the smoked meats that were cooked alongside them. Tim ordered something rather epic which frustratingly doesn’t seem to be on the website – I was hoping to be able to find …

Lunch at The Chicken Box, Boxpark, Shoreditch

Today I met up with a friend I hadn’t seen in ages for a quick lunch in Shoreditch, where I got to try out another of Boxpark’s eateries. This time, it was The Chicken Box.     The basic premise of The Chicken Box is fairly simple, as the photo above implies. You choose whether you would like a quarter chicken with one side (£5.50) or a half chicken with two sides (£9.50). Then you choose how you would like it cooked, out of a choice of BBQ, Jerk, Roast, Buttermilk, Honey & Soya or Tandoori. There are then a wide variety of sides to choose from, including slightly more unusual options, such as potato gratin, basmati rice, and mac n cheese.     They also offer ‘already put-together’ options, such as Mexican Chicken Fajitas and Jerusalem Chicken Livers. I went for one of these options (largely because I hadn’t quite decided when the waiter came over, and I thought it would be easier to choose one of these, rather than having to put something …
