Cakes at Violet Bakery, Hackney

My lovely friend Ceri let me know about a bakery in Hackney, fairly close to where I live, that she thought I’d like. She works in publishing and they recently published the cookbook for it – ‘The Violet Bakery Cookbook‘. I was lucky enough to be given a copy, which I’ll be giving away as a competition prize on my social media channels early next week, so keep your eyes peeled! I was planning to meet my friend, Laura, for lunch today, so we thought we’d check out the bakery. It was a stunning day today, barely a cloud in the sky, so it was the perfect day to visit.     The Violet Bakery is situated on a side street (Wilton Way) parallel to the main road between Dalston Junction and Hackney Central overground stations. And you could easily miss it, with its neutral white walls and small entrance… if it wasn’t for the massive queue leading out of the door, and the groups of people dotted around it! This was clearly a popular …

Luxury Easter Eggs: Hotel Chocolat and Heston Blumenthal/Waitrose

Each year Tim and I buy each other an Easter Egg and this year, we both ended up buying each other dark, rather luxurious eggs. I bought Tim the Heston Blumenthal Easter Egg from Waitrose: It’s in a very nice black and gold box – it almost looks more like a whisky/spirit box than an Easter egg! It opens up from the side to uncover a golden painted chocolate egg and when you crack into it, it reveals dark chocolate on the inside with a number of smaller mandarin flavour eggs, on a bed of edible straw. It’s all very ‘Heston’! Tim bought me the Rabot 1745 Easter Egg from Hotel Chocolat: I adore Hotel Chocolat – it’s pricey, but the chocolate is always so delicious. It’s the closest I’ve ever found to the chocolate we tasted in Belgium, many years ago. The Rabot 1745 egg is one of their ‘extra thick’ range – one side is pure Madagascan 72% dark chocolate, and the other in  Saint Lucian 70% milk chocolate – it’s going to …

Pancake Day indulgence at The Breakfast Club

Hello all! This is my very first blog post (you can find out more about me and why I set up this blog on my ‘about’ section). And I’m starting off with a post about our recent work visit to The Breakfast Club in Hoxton. We’d been talking about going somewhere for Pancake Day and The Breakfast Club was getting so much attention socially and in the local press that we just had to give it a go! I’d been to The Breakfast Club in Clapham many times before, but ironically enough, for dinner rather than breakfast! Three of us opted for the chocolate and peanut pancakes, while the other two went for the more traditional bacon and maple syrup. They were absolutely delicious – the chocolate was layered between the pancakes, with a peanut cream and brittle. It completely blew my wedding diet for a day, but it was worth it! They also had a clever promotion taking place, challenging people to eat 12 pancakes in 12 minutes (#bcpancakechallenge). If they failed, they donated …
