A Day At River Cottage With Foodies100

A couple of weeks ago, I had the exciting opportunity to visit River Cottage for the day, with over 50 other Foodies100 bloggers. I travelled down to Axminster after work the night before and stayed in a lovely little B&B called Kerrington House. I say little, my ‘room’ was enormous, more of an apartment really, with a separate living room and kitchen. I wished I was staying there for longer! In the morning I headed over to River Cottage and met all of the other bloggers in the top car park, where we learned we would be driven down to the farm by tractor! This was of course a fun experience, with everyone bumping and rocking around in the trailer, I just wondered if they also do this for the weddings they host at the venue! If anyone reading doesn’t know about River Cottage, let me give you a bit of background. It was originally established by celebrity chef,¬†Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, after his early smallholding experiences were documented in the Channel 4 River Cottage TV series, …

Wedding Cheese Cake – The West Country Cheese Company

For our wedding in February, one of the things that took the longest to decide on, was the wedding cake! Neither of us have a particularly sweet tooth, although we do love chocolate. There were a few that we loved the look of, such as the profiterole cake from Patisserie Valerie, but we felt that it was quite expensive for what it was. We saw some absolutely beautiful, more traditional cakes (I adored the hand painted cakes by Nevie Pie), but nothing really seemed to fit with our theme, which was Rustic English Country. We then looked into the idea of a wedding cake of cheeses, as we thought that this would be much more fitting (and I ADORE cheese!) Quite a few companies now do these, but we decided to go with the Rustic Raffia Cake from The West Country Cheese Company. They’re based in Barnstaple (very close to where my mum grew up) so it meant that the cake wouldn’t have to travel too far to Dartmoor. I spoke to a lovely lady …

Dinner at Michael Caines – ABode Exeter

In January, Tim and I spent a night at the ABode hotel in Exeter, while we were down there doing wedding planning. For those of you who don’t know, we both went to university in Exeter and have many happy memories there, which is why we wanted to get married in Devon. We settled for Dartmoor in the end, but most of our suppliers were located around the city centre, so we generally stayed around there. The ABode hotel (formerly the Royal Clarence) is located on the beautiful cathedral green and is home to one of Michelin starred chef, Michael Caines’, restaurants. We were booked onto a ‘date night’ package, which included the room (a beautiful one, too!), a bottle of prosecco and a three course meal for the two of us in Michael Caines’ restaurant. I had been to the restaurant once before, while we were at University. We went for dinner for a friend’s 21st birthday – it was lovely, but being students, we couldn’t afford to indulge too much! For starter I …
