Learning about Feta with Odysea and Roussas Dairy

There’s nothing I love more than an invitation to an event related to cheese. And even more so if it’s about my beloved feta! Feta is a cheese which I’ve grown up with – in Cyprus I always preferred it to halloumi. It was also the cause of many a family row when eating at a local taverna – cubes of it would be scattered on top of the Greek salad at the start of a meal, and there would inevitably always be a fight for the last piece! I was recently invited to a feta tasting at The Greek Larder in King’s Cross, a restaurant I’ve been meaning to visit ever since it opened but frustratingly never got round to it. It’s a 10 minute walk from Kings Cross, in the very cool and completely revamped area north of the station, with large glass windows surrounding it in-keeping with the area. But inside you feel very much like you’re in a traditional Greek restaurant, with local produce adorning the shelves and displays. I was …

Homemade Halloumi with The Big Cheese Making Kit

As you probably know by now, I’m completely cheese mad. I don’t think there’s been a single cheese I’ve tried in my life so far that I didn’t like!¬† In Cyprus we had Feta and Halloumi. The latter was often served grilled with tomato and Lountza (a type of dried, smoked pork). Or sometimes watermelon, which was lovely and refreshing in the summer.¬† The other day I came across a British company called The Big Cheese Making Kit, that sell a number of kits to help you make your own cheese at home. It’s something I’d never really considered doing, as I thought it would be extremely difficult in a standard kitchen. But when I saw the Halloumi kit, I just had to give it a try! I wondered if it would taste like the Halloumi I used to eat at home, and also whether it would really be worth the effort, as opposed to buying it from a shop. The Halloumi kit comes with vegetarian rennet tablets, organic sea salt, organic dried mint, a …

A Gourmet Sarnie for British Sandwich Week

There seems to be an awareness week for everything these days, from serious charity matters to fun, silly things. When I heard about British Sandwich Week taking place this week, I took it to be more of the latter. But it sounded amazing to me! Do you remember that episode of Friends where Joey risks his life to save his sandwich? Yeah, I get that… After looking into it, I’ve discovered that there is an official British Sandwich Association that runs the week, from 10th-16th May. It was founded in 1990 to set technical standards, encourage innovation and excellence and provide a collective voice for all involved in the making, distribution and retailing of sandwiches. There are lots of things going on to mark British Sandwich Week. For instance,¬†Frankonia Bakery has created The Super Sandwich; a super-sized, two metre baguette, filled with pulled pork, coleslaw and BBQ sauce, which they have donated to The Soup Kitchen, run by the American Church on Tottenham Court Road. And so, to mark British Sandwich Week, I thought I’d …
