A Real Greek Fat Wedding…

Greek food is probably my favourite type of cuisine. It means a lot to me, having grown up in Cyprus, and I try to cook/bake it at home as much as possible. Here are a couple of my previous recipes, Lamb moussaka and Baklava. I’ve previously reviewed The Real Greek, a chain of Greek restaurants around the London area and really enjoyed it – anything for a little taste of home. And I was just sent their brand new cook book! It has been put together with Tonia Buxton, a chef who the team at The Real Greek have been collaborating with in their restaurants for some time now. In an interview on their blog, when asked how the cookbook came together, Tonia said: “we started out on getting the recipes down to a more manageable level for the home (2-4-6 servings). We also asked a few of our key staff to look back into their family recipes that have been passed down generation to generation in their family and share their finding with us/you. There are …

#OrganicUnboxed – Greek Lamb Curry Recipe

This is the second of my recipes for the #OrganicUnboxed Challenge. You can read about the challenge here, and my first recipe here. For this recipe, I thought I’d draw inspiration from my upbringing in Cyprus. Looking in the box, I could see quite a few items which would go into a moussaka. I’ve actually written a recipe for this on the blog previously, so I thought I’d try something a little different. And this is where the idea for a Greek ‘curry’ came from. Greek Lamb Curry Serves 2 Ingredients 1 white onion (chopped finely) 2 cloves of garlic (minced) 2 aubergines (chopped into bite-sized chunks) 400g lamb mince 1 tin of chopped tomatoes 1 tin of chick peas (drained) 1 tsp cumin 1 tsp coriander 1 tsp cayenne pepper 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tbsp tomato purée Salt and Pepper Olive Oil 1 cup of brown rice Method Fry the onion in a medium sized pan (one which has a lid) on a medium heat, with a dash of olive oil, …

Lunch at Suvlaki, Soho

I haven’t tried anywhere near enough Greek restaurants in London yet for my liking! This is the longest I’ve ever spent away from Cyprus now and I miss it a lot, especially the food, so it was definitely time for a trip to a local Greek food spot in Soho. I’d walked past Suvlaki a number of times and had seen them doing lots on social media, so I couldn’t wait to try them out. This week I took a couple of my colleagues who were fairly new to Greek food and didn’t really know what to expect. But by the end of the meal they were definitely impressed! Suvlaki is a small Greek restaurant in Soho that largely specialises in kebabs and skewers, and the menu is pretty straightforward. We decided to order a selection of both, including pork, chicken and wild boar sausage. I can’t say I ever had wild boar sausage in Cyprus, but I knew it would be tasty. We also ordered some chips and a Greek salad. All of the …

Dinner at The Real Greek, St Martins Lane

Quite a few years ago (more than I would like to admit) I had lunch at The Real Greek with a friend. As you can guess from the name, it’s a Greek food restaurant with a number of locations across London. I was in my first job after graduating University and still regularly went back to Cyprus (as much as annual leave would allow!) but I was craving ‘home food’ and came across The Real Greek. But I was disappointed. I felt it was fairly expensive for rather small portions compared to what I was used to at home, and therefore didn’t go back again. However, I was kindly given the opportunity to visit The Real Greek on St Martins Lane in Covent Garden and definitely wanted to give it another try. The lovely Sophie of Sophie Loves Food (check out her blog, her amazing baking will give you serious sugar cravings!) joined me and we were seated in the candlelit window seat. I must apologise that the photos aren’t the best quality – despite being in …

My Homemade Moussaka Recipe

This is one of my very favourite dishes to make, as it really reminds me of home. When you add all of the herbs and spices to the lamb mince, the smell is so good, it always makes me go ‘mmmm’ in a Nigella-like fashion! There are various ways of making it, but this is my recipe. Please note that it takes time! When I made this one (with these photographs) I did it after work, and while it was still perfectly tasty, it could definitely have done with cooking for longer. Ingredients 750g lamb mince 4 medium white potatoes 2 large aubergines 2 tomatoes 2 cloves of garlic 5 small white mushrooms 1 onion 1 tsp cumin 1 tsp coriander 1 tsp cayenne pepper 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tbsp tomato purée 3 fresh mint leaves or 1 tbsp concentrated mint sauce  Salt and Pepper Olive Oil For the white sauce (this is a recipe I’ve always used from the BBC website) 50g butter 50g plain flour 400ml milk 25g finely grated …
