Experiencing Norse’s new home in Harrogate

You might recall in December I took my Mum for a superb tasting menu at Norse restaurant in Harrogate. If not, you can refresh your memory right here. I was very impressed with the intricacy of the dishes and combinations of flavours, and I was so pleased that a restaurant of this quality (and excellent social media channels, always a bonus for me!) had opened up in my Mum’s ‘neck of the woods’ in North Yorkshire. The restaurant offered the tasting menu during the evening, in the restaurant where Scandi café ‘Baltzersen’s’ was housed during the daytime. Quite simply, it wasn’t ‘theirs’ (although owned by the same owner, Paul Rawlinson). And this was reflected in the ambience, design and décor of the restaurant. It felt like a café, which indeed it was. But with fine dining and higher prices in the evening, it was a little jarring. I’d heard that they were hoping to relocate to their own premises, and so when I saw their Kickstarter campaign, I knew I had to back them. The …

Mum’s Birthday Dinner at Norse, Harrogate

Since Mum has been living back in the UK, she’s had a rather impressive social life with friends who have been amazing! But something she rarely gets to do is go out for a fancy dinner. Getting dressed up and going out to a nice restaurant was one of my Dad’s favourite things to do, and something which has been notably absent in Mum’s life since he has been gone. So in December I though I’d treat Mum for her birthday to go out for dinner in one of the nearby towns in North Yorkshire. The question was, where would we go? She had always been amazed by the tasting menus Tim and I had been fortunate to experience, so I was over the moon when I discovered a restaurant in Harrogate which offered just that. Norse restaurant, led by Head Chef Simon Jewitt, is located within Baltzersens, a Nordic cafe in the centre of town on Oxford Street which transforms into a fine dining restaurant in the evening. As such, it has a relaxed …

Wild Yorkshire – May 2016

You might have read on here that I was born in North Yorkshire, in the beautiful town of Harrogate, to be precise. My mum recently moved back to a little village on the way to York, and I go up to visit as much as I can. I regularly post restaurant/event reviews of my visits up to Yorkshire, but it’s such a stunning place, full of incredible nature and wildlife, that I thought I’d start a series of posts simply with the photos I take when out and about – they don’t really fit into any of my usual blog posts, but the photos are definitely worth sharing. So here are some of my snaps from my last visit in May 2016… Let me know what you think, would love to hear your thoughts!

Afternoon Tea at Bettys, Harrogate

As you may have read in this previous blog post, I recently spent the weekend up in North Yorkshire where my mum lives, and where I grew up as a child.  On my last day, before begrudgingly catching the train back down to London, we decided to go for Afternoon Tea at Bettys Tearoom in Harrogate. I had taken my mum to Afternoon Tea at Harrods last year as a Mother’s Day treat and we enjoyed it so much – I think it’s a lovely way for mums and daughters to have cake and a catch-up! Apparently Afternoon Tea was first invented by The Langham Hotel in London and they are marking the 150th anniversary this year.     Bettys is highly regarded across the globe and at weekends, you will often find a queue around the corner of the building, with tourists from all over the world paying a visit. It was founded by Frederick Belmont, a Swiss baker and confectioner who came to England in search of opportunities to develop his craft skills. …

#FoodieFriends – My Mum’s Visit To BBC Good Food Show Spring

I’m very excited to have a post on the blog from my very own ‘Mumsie’ – I’m sure my mum will happily admit to being a technophobe – she doesn’t have any social media accounts, so having her words written up on here is really exciting for me. She’s written about her experience at the BBC Good Food Show Spring in Harrogate in April. Keeping with the theme of the photos from #FoodieFriends so far, here’s a pic of Mum on our wedding day earlier this year, doing a fantastic speech that had everyone in hysterics!  I’ve also noticed how much I write like her!! Over to you, Mumsie! “Earlier this year, together with two friends, I visited the BBC Good Food Show, held at the Harrogate International Centre. Having only recently returned from living in Cyprus, where ‘Food Shows’ are few and far between, I was eagerly awaiting this new experience! From the minute we walked through the doors, into the first ‘Hall’ we were greeted with a vast array of stands, housing everything …
