A Sunday Lunch at Fire Stables, Wimbledon

This is a long overview blog post from late last Summer which I’m finally getting around to writing up. But it’s about a Sunday Roast, so maybe it’s actually more suitable as we’re now in Winter and chillier weekends when a good heart-warming roast dinner is just what you need. I say it’s about a Roast Dinner. It was technically a combo of roast and seafood. I’ll explain… We live in Tooting and while we often pop into the centre of Wimbledon for shopping or the cinema, we hadn’t explored the village before. That was until we visited Fire Stables. It’s about a 15-minute walk from the station into a very charming party of Wimbledon and looks out onto a quiet street – in the summer it quite literally opened out onto the street with folding back doors/windows and so that’s where we sat, soaking up the sunshine. Chateaubriand Sundays at Barbecoa, St Paul’s

Steak, steak, steak. There’s nothing I love more than a big juicy steak – I reckon at least half of my Instagram posts are steak (or at least meat!) focused and I’ve written about it countless times here on the blog, from restaurant reviews to butchery classes. But at the weekend, I had one of the best steaks I’ve ever had, and I’d even go as far as to say perhaps the best steak in London. It’s a bold claim, indeed! Where did this miraculously feat of beefy wonder occur? The usual Gaucho, or Hawksmoor? It was in fact at Barbecoa in St Paul’s. Learning about Soy Sauce with Kikkoman at Sushisamba

How much do you know about soy sauce? If you’re anything like me, then probably not a lot! I love it, and happily pour it over stir fries and sushi (mixed with a little wasabi). But I was embarrassingly ignorant about the story and history behind it. I was recently invited to an event by Kikkoman and I was excited to learn more about it, and banish my soy-related ignorance. Not only that, but the event was hosted on the 38th floor of Heron Tower at Sushisamba, a Japanese-Brazilian-Peruvian restaurant which had been on my list for some time but I’d just never got around to visiting. Upon arrival (after getting rather giddy and excited by the glass lift journey to the top – I know I’m late to the party but I challenge anyone not to get excited by it if you’re a Sushisamba lift virgin. A wonderful evening at The Ledbury

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of dining at The Ledbury. It was four of my friend’s 30th birthdays (one of them including Tim!) and Matt had managed to get us a table at this incredible restaurant, one of very few to have two Michelin stars! Chef Brett Graham has won countless awards since beginning his career in Australia at the age of 15, working in a fish restaurant. At The Ledbury he is joined by Head Chef Greg Austin, also from Australia. For dinner, the restaurant offers a Tasting Menu or a four course meal, and we decided on the latter. Lunch at Pig’s Ears, Richmond

I discovered Pig’s Ears in Richmond quite a few years ago. It’s right in the middle of Richmond, close to the river, and it’s in a downstairs cellar – you might not notice it if you’re just passing by, but it’s well worth the visit! Over Christmas Tim and I thought we’d take the parents there for lunch, as they love good craft beers and moules, both of which the restaurant is known for. Every other time I’d been, the place had been packed – the front ‘pub’ part (very cosy and candlelit) is usually full, with plenty of people in the restaurant at the back. I was surprised to find barely anyone in there on this visit, but it was lunchtime on Christmas Eve after all! We were seated down in the restaurant but felt a bit silly eating alone in a big open space, so we moved up to the pub area where a few other families were. Dinner at Tota, Tooting

Last week, Tim and I added another place to our list of local restaurants, after visiting Tota near Tooting Broadway. We both had a bit of a steak craving and we wanted to tuck into some good grub nearby so we could just walk (or roll!) back home in a matter of minutes. The restaurant was dimly lit and so cosy – perfect when it was cold and raining outside. I instantly opted for a mulled wine with brandy, while Tim ordered a beer. Please excuse the quality of the photos – a certain husband had promised to bring my camera from home with him and forgot 😉 So I had to make do with my camera phone. Superstar Korean BBQ, Tottenham Court Road

The lovely Lauren of Elle Bloggs kindly invited me to join her for dinner at Korean Superstar BBQ recently. It was in an area near Tottenham Court Road which I’d never been to before (St Giles) with quite a few restaurants and pubs. Useful to know now that I’m working just around the corner! I really didn’t know what to expect from a Korean BBQ, but was certainly intrigued! (I didn’t look up the menu beforehand as I like to be surprised!) The restaurant itself is hard to miss – it’s glass fronted all the way around with big hanging lights. We were seated at our table and found that the BBQ was actually in the middle of the table itself, inset into it. I’ve cooked food on hot stones in restaurants before but never quite like this. A Modern Way of Italian Dining at Vapiano

As many of you will know, I adore Italian food. Bread, cheese, meat, fresh herbs and vegetables, I mean, what’s not to love? Last week I tried out a restaurant which is taking a unique spin on Italian dining, called Vapiano. Originally established in Germany in 2002, it now has over 150 restaurants across Europe, and I visited one of the three London branches, in Southwark. Upon arrival we were each given a card which we were told the food and drink would be charged to, which we needed to keep hold of, and we would then pay at the till on our way out. There are three main ‘sections’ to the restaurant, a pizza counter, a pasta counter and a drinks/dessert bar. You order your food/drink from each section, hold up your card to the scanner, and your order is added to the bill. And what’s great about the open plan layout at Vapiano is that you can see your food being prepared right in front of you. The chefs will whip up your …

Chifafa – Kebabs Done Properly!

When I lived in Cyprus, the kebab was a well respected dish. The gorgeous fluffy bread would be filled with all kinds of meaty and veggie delights, bursting with tzatziki. It therefore came as quite a shock and disappointment to discover the ‘British Kebab’ when I moved back to the UK for uni, or rather the ‘Drunk Kebab’ as many may know it by! It’s the go-to destination for late night revellers keen to fill their bellies on the way home, happy to shovel anything remotely resembling food into their mouths. And don’t get me wrong, I’ve certainly been there, but it’s just in no way the same as a ‘proper’ kebab. As such, I was excited to learn about Chifafa, a restaurant/takeaway in Clerkenwell whose aim is to make kebabs ‘the right way’. I just had to check them out and judge this for myself! The venue itself is fairly modern and in-keeping with the other buildings and businesses in the area – it isn’t trying to be Greek, Turkish or Middle Eastern in style. …
