A Modern Moroccan Dinner at Zayane, Notting Hill

One place I really do want to visit at the moment is Morocco, as I’ve always heard wonderful things about the food. I enjoy cooking Moroccan style food at home, although I’m never completely sure how authentic it is. So when I was invited to try out a new Moroccan restaurant which had just opened up on Golborne Road in Notting Hill/Ladbroke Grove, I couldn’t wait to learn more about the cuisine and culture. Founded by Meryem Mortell, originally from Casablanca, Zayane opened up a few weeks ago, with Chris Bower as Head Chef. The Yorkshireman has previously worked at Michelin-starred restaurant Thackeray’s and The Ivy, and his aim at Zayane is to combine the vibrant flavours of authentic Moroccan cuisine, with modern culinary techniques and European influences. We were given a choice of two starters, mains and desserts, which was nice, as often at blogger dinners you eat what’s provided unless you have specific dietary requirements. It’s not usually a problem for me as I’ll happily eat anything (I’m probably the least fussy eater …

A wonderful evening at The Ledbury

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of dining at The Ledbury. It was four of my friend’s 30th birthdays (one of them including Tim!) and Matt had managed to get us a table at this incredible restaurant, one of very few to have two Michelin stars! Chef Brett Graham has won countless awards since beginning his career in Australia at the age of 15, working in a fish restaurant. At The Ledbury he is joined by Head Chef Greg Austin, also from Australia. For dinner, the restaurant offers a Tasting Menu or a four course meal, and we decided on the latter. The quality of these photos won’t do these exceptional plates of food justice, but it really didn’t feel appropriate to get a big camera out – our phones had to do! I ordered the following: First Course: Hand Dived Scallops, Ceviche, Seaweed and Herb Oil, Frozen English Wasabi Second Course: Warm Bantam’s Egg, Celeriac, Dried Ham, Arbois and Summer Truffle Main Course: Iberico Pork, Purple Carrots Baked in Hay, Mustard and Trompettes Dessert: Warm Chocolate, Tartlet with Malt …

Lunch at Pizza East, Portobello Road

One of my favourite companies is the Soho House group. Their private members clubs are second to none – an evening on the roof terrace at Shoreditch House with its swimming pool and loungers is hard to beat. The group owns a number of restaurants including Chicken Shop, which I wrote about recently. Last week I was kindly invited to review Pizza East. I walk past the Shoreditch restaurant every day to get to work, and therefore rather naively believed (given the name), that this was the only one. I’ve since learned that they are also based in Notting Hill/Portobello Road, Kentish Town and also overseas in Chicago and Istanbul.  I was invited to the Portobello Road restaurant which I was particularly excited about, as I really don’t get to spend enough time in West London. After battling the Notting Hill crowds, the lovely restaurant, with its blue and white awning, felt like a little jewel amongst the hectic market.  The restaurant was pretty much full when we arrived just after midday, as we soon …
