Cooking Cabrito Goat Meat and ‘Goatober’

Growing up in Cyprus, we were quite literally surrounded by goats – we didn’t eat them (that we knew of!), but we ate cheese produced from their milk on a near daily basis. I was therefore so saddened to learn recently that a huge number of male goats (estimated 40,000 per year) are killed at birth because they are simply not needed. Goats cheese is in such high demand that goats are being bred for the female goats to continue to produce milk. There’s an interesting article about this on Munchies here, if you’d like to read more into this (and I recommend you do). Now a number of companies, such as Cabrito, are encouraging people to eat goat meat and to ensure these billies aren’t dying in vain. I recently tried out goat meat for the first time at Gourmet Goat in Borough Market – an absolute must-try if you’re in the area. It was delicious with a unique and very ‘meaty’ flavour. After this, I was keen to try it out at home, …

A Day At River Cottage With Foodies100

A couple of weeks ago, I had the exciting opportunity to visit River Cottage for the day, with over 50 other Foodies100 bloggers. I travelled down to Axminster after work the night before and stayed in a lovely little B&B called Kerrington House. I say little, my ‘room’ was enormous, more of an apartment really, with a separate living room and kitchen. I wished I was staying there for longer! In the morning I headed over to River Cottage and met all of the other bloggers in the top car park, where we learned we would be driven down to the farm by tractor! This was of course a fun experience, with everyone bumping and rocking around in the trailer, I just wondered if they also do this for the weddings they host at the venue! If anyone reading doesn’t know about River Cottage, let me give you a bit of background. It was originally established by celebrity chef, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, after his early smallholding experiences were documented in the Channel 4 River Cottage TV series, …

I’m going to River Cottage for #BlogCamp!

I’ve got some very exciting news! I’ve won a competition to attend #BlogCamp with Foodies100… at the one and only River Cottage! For those of you who don’t know, Foodies100 is a directory of UK food and drink blogs, that ranks the blogs using a unique scoring algorithm, which reflects each blog’s popularity, influence and engagement.  There are over 5,000 blogs signed up to it, and after three months of blogging, I’ve already made it to 718 – I went up 104 places between March and April, and 150 places between April and May. So I’ve still got a long way to go, but this bodes well for my little blog 🙂 And this week, I entered a competition to attend ‘Blog Camp’ – a day organised by the lovely people at Foodies100 where bloggers get together to network, learn more about blogging from expert speakers and generally have lots of fun and merriment.  This year, #BlogCamp is being held at the renowned River Cottage, made famous by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. And I’m going!! I’m so excited to …
