A Sunday Lunch at Fire Stables, Wimbledon

This is a long overview blog post from late last Summer which I’m finally getting around to writing up. But it’s about a Sunday Roast, so maybe it’s actually more suitable as we’re now in Winter and chillier weekends when a good heart-warming roast dinner is just what you need. I say it’s about a Roast Dinner. It was technically a combo of roast and seafood. I’ll explain… We live in Tooting and while we often pop into the centre of Wimbledon for shopping or the cinema, we hadn’t explored the village before. That was until we visited Fire Stables. It’s about a 15-minute walk from the station into a very charming party of Wimbledon and looks out onto a quiet street – in the summer it quite literally opened out onto the street with folding back doors/windows and so that’s where we sat, soaking up the sunshine. It’s part of the Young’s network, but what I love about these pubs is that you would never know they’re part of a chain unless you really …

A Sunday Roast of epic proportions at Blacklock, Soho

I’m always in search of fabulous Sunday roasts. We normally visit local restaurants to us rather than travelling into Central London, but a couple of Sundays ago I was tasked with finding somewhere for a group of friends and I to go. Turns out trying to find fairly last minute availability for eight people for a Sunday roast in Central London isn’t easy – some of them couldn’t actually accommodate groups of this size! Eventually I struck gold with Blacklock in Soho. I’d seen some incredible instagram photos of their food and couldn’t wait to experience it with my friends. The only availability was at midday (it’s a very popular place!) and when we arrived at 11.45am, people were already waiting outside for their reservations. There’s nothing to see from the street – you go through the door and straight down the stairs to the underground den of meaty goodness. It feels like a nice secret! We were seated on stools around a long wooden table, with another group of people down the other end …

The Sunday Lunch Experiment; The Castle, Tooting

The latest place Tim and I visited for our tour of local pubs and restaurants for Sunday Lunch was The Castle in Tooting, last weekend. This time we took my Mum, who was visiting for the weekend (and our first official ‘guest’ in our new home, which was exciting!) I was a little bit nervous – my Mum can do an epic sunday roast, and living in Yorkshire, I imagine she has a whole host of great Sunday Lunch venues on her doorstep. The Castle was recently revamped and it looks pretty impressive now. It’s a big pub with various sections, including an orangery and very cool outdoor section with little alcoves that you can book out, each one with a different theme. Here are some photos from their website: For Sunday Lunch, we all went for something different – I chose the lamb, Tim went for the poussin and Mum chose the beef. What I really liked about the menu was that every dish came with a Yorkshire Pudding, whether you ordered the beef …

The Sunday Lunch Experiment – The Selkirk, Tooting

There’s nothing better than a good Sunday lunch, and I’d been keen to try out what Tooting has to offer on the Sunday lunch front. Somewhere that’s walking distance from our house, so we can fill our bellies with good grub and drinks and then wander home. The first Sunday Lunch we tried out was at The Selkirk, near Tooting Broadway station. It’s an old Victorian pub and appears to be quite renowned locally for its food. They cure their own bacon, bake their own bread, and make sure everything is as fresh as can be. They also have lots of events taking place – we’ve yet to go to one of these, but it’s on the cards. We both decided to go for the beef (I just can’t resist a Yorkie Pud!) and when the massive plate of food arrived, I was definitely impressed! Hidden under the beef and Yorkshire Pudding, there was even more goodness underneath – sweet potato and cauliflower! The beef seemed to be a bit tough to cut it, but it …
