Taste of London 2017

Last month was my absolute favourite foodie event of the year, Taste of London. I’ve attended and written about it in 2015 and 2016, and now it’s time for this year’s instalment. And I was craving it more than ever. Food festivals are becoming increasingly popular in this country and I visit as many as I can for both work and pleasure. One of these was the London Evening Standard ‘Night Market’ a few weeks ago which I’d been really looking forward to, but unfortunately it was a big disappointment. There wasn’t many food stalls (or at least, not as many as I was expecting) and because the stalls were street food rather than restaurants with kitchens, the queues were long. Seriously long. In the whole evening I had two dishes and one drink. It was a real shame. As soon as I walked into Taste of London on a beautiful sunny evening at Regent’s Park, I breathed a sigh of relief. The atmosphere is always fantastic and each year I’m honestly like a kid …

Taste of London 2016

One of my absolute favourite events of the year is Taste of London. I went last year and just loved everything about it. An outdoor festival, packed with some of the best restaurants in London, serving small portions of delicious food so you have the opportunity to try lots of dishes… what more could a foodie want? The event runs throughout the week and into the weekend – this year I was tempted to go earlier in the week, but decided to go on Saturday to make the most of it with plenty of tipples, and without fear of a mid-week hangover! It was quite muddy underfoot when we went, as it had been raining pretty heavily during the week, but we were fortunate that it stayed away for our visit. Still, I don’t think rain could dampen my spirits at this event! Like last year, I thought I’d list the dishes we tried and tell you what I thought! First up was Cobia sashimi with pickled green chilli salsa, black sesame and chive oil …

Özerlat Turkish Coffee – A Taste of Home

When I was a teenager in Cyprus, from the age of about 15 to 18, I used to waitress a few evenings a week after school and over the weekend. My first waitressing job was at a traditional Cypriot taverna which holds a lot of memories for me, called Vatouthkia. I must get round to writing a dedicated post about it soon. When you go out for a meal in Cyprus, no matter how hot it is, it always ends with a coffee! Either a simple nescafe (usually reserved for the tourists!) or ‘proper’ Greek coffee; sketo (without sugar) metrio (medium) or glyko (sweet). And one of my tasks at Vatouthkia was to make this coffee. Pretty daunting, when it has to be just right, and you’re serving it to the locals who know exactly how it should be done. And it isn’t just a case of putting some in a cup and adding hot water – it’s brewed in a small pot over heat, and stirred until just right. It’s strong but the flavour …

Taste of London 2015: Review

Wandering around a park filled as far as the eye could see with top London restaurants, the scent of meats and seafood filling the air, I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. Taste of London takes place at Regents Park every summer and last weekend, I got to visit for the first time, as I’d always been away when it was taking place before. This year it was held from 17th-21st June, and I went with Tim and our friends James and Clare on the Saturday. Clutching hold of a big wad of ‘Crowns’ (the Taste of London currency to purchase food dishes), we headed inside! There are so many restaurants and suppliers there, it’s hard to know where to begin! I’d picked up some hints and tips from press that had attended earlier in the week, so I had a few ideas. So I thought it would be easiest to list what we drank and ate at the show… What we drank Meantime Brewery Lager & Pale Ale This was our first stop …
