Dinner at View 94, Putney

I love discovering new restaurants, especially when they’re fairly close to home – a great example of this is View 94, located right on the river between Putney and Wandsworth, where I was invited to a group dinner recently. We were seated upstairs overlooking the river – I liked the look and feel of the restaurant, it felt a bit like being on a boat moored at the side of the river. The food is described as a fusion of modern European cuisine – Head Chef Antonio Sanzone says on the website: “My passion for cooking comes from the way I was brought up. My father, a retired cook, has taught me how to transform a job into a hobby and my mother taught me how to use simple and organic ingredients without compromising on quality and taste.” This all came across in the menu we were presented with, and I found it really difficult to choose as it all sounded so good, and really up my street! The World’s Most Expensive Pho at Pho & Bun

Last week I was kindly invited by the lovely Sheepa to try out the world’s most expensive Pho at the Vietnamese restaurant Pho & Bun in Soho, named ‘Super Pho’. And it was all for a good cause, to highlight a campaign the restaurant is running to raise money for Action Against Hunger! So what goes into the world’s most expensive Pho?! Taking 2 months to prepare, the beef stock is cooked for 72 hours using a whole leg of dry aged beef.  Owner of Pho & Bun, Andy Le and his head chef Graeme Hibbs are using A5 grade Kobe beef which is retail priced at around £600/kg – the most expensive on the market, using two different cuts of beef to make both tender and rare beef. All Kobe beef cows are carefully monitored and fed a specialized diet which includes corn and pineapple. The cows are also massaged regularly in order to maintain their muscle tone. Pho & Bun are only using organic produce and herbs for the Super Pho Bowl. The Tam …

Brunch at Brickwood, Tooting

I’m sure you all know by now that I bloody love a good brunch, and if that includes a bloody good Bloody Mary, even better! We’ve been trying out some of the cafes and restaurants near where we live, the latest of which was Brickwood in Tooting Market. We’d visited it a few weeks before when we were looking for a quick coffee (and a cheeky slice of cake, ssshhhh!) which was when we realised they do a pretty amazing brunch, and knew we’d have to return soon! It was pretty packed on the Sunday morning we visited, but the staff were still really attentive and we were served quickly. We ordered a couple of flat whites to kick start the day, along with a Bloody Mary each. We were both seriously impressed with the latter – it was one of the best I’ve had, largely due to the cute extras it came with – bacon, a quail egg and what I took to be a mini hash brown. A French Dinner at Blanchette Soho

French cuisine is one of my favourites in the world – it’s usually meaty, creamy, cheesy and decadent! But the techniques involved in French cooking are normally quite traditional. I’ve previously written about our visit to The Waterside Inn, one of the only UK establishments to maintain three Michelin stars. And while the food is absolutely superb, it’s very ‘old school’ in style. You can tell that Alain Roux has been cooking like this for a long time and it clearly works very well. So when I met Yannis and Maxime at a recent Teisseire event, I was intrigued to learn that at their French restaurant in Soho, Blanchette, they serve French cuisine ‘with a twist.’  I finally got round to visiting Blanchette last week with Ceri. It’s located to the North of Soho, a few minutes away from Oxford Circus tube station. I left it quite last minute to book and there was only room left to sit at the bar. Breakfast at Foxcroft & Ginger, Whitechapel

Breakfast or brunch might just be my favourite meal of the day (provided it’s done right, of course, which usually means with plenty of meat and bread, in my case!) And there are lots of great spots to go for breakfast around where I live in East London. A while ago, I noticed a place called ‘Foxcroft & Ginger‘ in Whitechapel when I was passing on the bus, and had been meaning to give it a go. So when I was offered the chance to try out their breakfast last week, I was really looking forward to it.     You might not notice it during the day – it’s one of the many shops and restaurants on Mile End road. ‘The World’s Most Expensive Food’ Series – TV Review

When I first wrote this blog post last week (14th May 2015), I only thought I’d write about the first episode of the series. I figured that would give a good overview of what the programme is about, and the message it was trying to get across. After watching the second episode last night, it turns out I was very much mistaken, so I felt compelled to update my blog post. If you scroll down, you’ll find my views on Episode Two.
