Birthday Lunch at The Black Swan at Oldstead

Ever since my Mum moved back to Yorkshire, I’ve been dying to visit The Black Swan in Oldstead, but felt like I needed an ‘occasion’ given its Michelin-star quality food (and prices!). I finally had the perfect excuse for my 30th birthday in October and asked my Mum if a trip there for lunch could be my present (a bit cheeky, but it worked, and she got to enjoy it too!). I booked at the start of the year last year as it’s high in demand. Mid-way through last year it was voted the ‘Travellers Choice Best Fine Dining Restaurant in the World’ by TripAdvisor, so I was glad I got my booking in before then, as I’m sure the requests went through the roof. It all seems so baffling for a tiny restaurant in a humble little village such as Oldstead. Despite it being around 20 minutes from where my Mum lives and where I grew up as a child, we didn’t know anything about it until its incredible rise to fame over the …

A light lunch at Mannion & Co, Helmsley

On a recent trip up to Yorkshire to see my Mum, we went for a light lunch at Mannion & Co in the quaint market town of Helmsley – the only market town in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. I’d been to their York restaurant a couple of years ago which I wrote about here and since then, the company has been going from strength to strength. The new location in Helmsley definitely has a different vibe to York – it feels a lot more cosy and rural given the setting, welcoming dog walkers to take a pew downstairs, with views across to the beautiful Helmsley Castle from the top floor. It’s also incredibly popular with queues at times – good reviews travel fast! They also sell a range of superb cakes, pastries and cheeses. Mum and I were just looking for something fairly simple as we were going out for dinner later that day, but having said that, Mannion & Co doesn’t really do simple! I ordered a scotch egg and Mum ordered a …

Open Farm Sunday at High Farndale

Last weekend, I went up to visit my mum in North Yorkshire. This is where I was born and grew up, until we moved to Cyprus when I was 12. My dad sadly passed away very unexpectedly in 2013 and while life in Cyprus was wonderful, it was a good time for my mum to return to the UK, which she did in February this year. And I’m so glad she’s back! We get on brilliantly (we speak every day on the phone!) and now I can just pop up on the train for the weekend. Hubby was away in New York (alright for some, eh?) so I thought it was the perfect time to spend some quality time with my Ma! And it just so happened to coincide with something called ‘Open Farm Sunday’ which I saw being talked about on Twitter. Open Farm Sunday does pretty much what it says on the tin – on one day of the year, across the UK, selected farms open up their doors (or gates, perhaps, in …
